Adventure Elopement Shoe Guide: Tips and Inspiration

Adventure elopements are so new and unique that I’m often asked what kind of shoes my couples should wear. You’ll want to be safe, comfortable, and feel great in whatever shoes you choose, but what that means to you is as unique as your elopement.

Disclosure: I’ve included affiliate links with recommended hiking gear in this post. If you click through and buy something, I’ll receive a small portion of that sale. You won’t be charged more, and I haven’t been paid by any of these retailers to share their information. These are all my genuine preferences.

What kind of environment will you be eloping in?

First, you’ll need to consider where you’ll be eloping. Will you be walking on uneven ground or hiking? Your priorities should be your own safety and comfort — you’ll be in these shoes ALL day. It’s possible to be stylish as well, but we’ll get to that below.

Waterfalls and mossy rocks are slippery — they require shoes with good grip!

Season

Choose shoes that are seasonally appropriate — like warmer boots for snow or waterproof boots for the rainforest. If you’re eloping in the mountains, know that it’s often colder than expected at high elevations, especially if you’re there for golden hour as I always recommend. In warmer weather, you can opt for flats, sandals, or even going barefoot in some cases.

If you’re unsure of what the weather will be like, ask your adventure elopement photographer.

Bring a pair of shoes you love, even if you plan on going barefoot — it can be colder than you’d expect.

Style and inspiration

I think hiking boots look awesome under wedding dresses and suits, and they fit the Pacific Northwest vibe, but I realize that’s not everyone’s taste. Below is a list of styles and brand suggestions for every type of shoe you could be interested in.

If you do go with a heel, choose one that is short and chunky. You’ll want to feel steady on your feet! It’s also possible to bring a pair of shoes to change into after you’ve reached your location, or just to wear during your ceremony.

Test the shoes out

I’m a firm believer that good shoes don’t need to be broken in. If they don’t feel comfortable when you’re trying them on, they’re not going to get better with more wear. Instead, purchase shoes that feel good and wear them around the house to get a feel for them. If they hurt to wear for more than an hour, they probably aren’t the right shoes for this adventure. Once you’ve found your shoes, bring them to your outfit fittings.

Socks

If you’ll be wearing boots, good socks are vital. They’ll help keep your feet from blistering, wick moisture away, and provide some cushioning. I love the Darn Tough brand.
