Ever wonder what goes on at a styled wedding shoot? Here’s a look behind the scenes of the Winter Green Weddings styled wedding I recently photographed.
I photograph styled weddings in a similar way to real wedding days. Hair and makeup usually marks the start of the day and, during that time, I’m photographing many of the details, including the bouquet, jewelry and dress.
I usually photograph all the details in the same space to keep the photographs consistent. For example, I photographed the jewelry on the dress’ train while it hung in the same window for the dress shot. Using natural light from a window is my favorite way to shoot indoors!
While I was busy photographing the details in Winter Green Wedding’s getting ready space, The PNW Bride hair and makeup team was working on our model, Leslie Williams, in the adjoining bathroom. When they finished, we staged a few shots of them working on Leslie next to the window.
You might be surprised to know that a lot of bridal shots on real wedding days are styled like this as well. Oftentimes, hair and makeup isn’t done in an area with ideal lighting for photos, so photographers set up shots like these after it’s complete.
Since we loaned a gown from The Wedding Bell, we didn’t have the luxury of using a tailor to fit the gown to our model. The dress was a little big, so to photograph the back of it, I had Leslie pinch the front tight. When we finished with those shots, Diana, the wedding planner from Passionate Weddings, pinned the back of the dress tight with clips for the rest of the shoot.
We were hoping to set up the styled ceremony and reception outdoors on the grass with the forest as the backdrop, but it rained the entire day. I took full advantage of the venue’s large porch for portraits while Diana seamlessly changed everything to our rainy-day backup plan in the barn. Thankfully, Winter Green Weddings is as gorgeous inside as it is out!
This styled shoot was so fun to photograph because I got to meet and work with so many amazing wedding vendors! I loved that everyone got to be creative, try out new trends and worked so well together. Check out the entire shoot here.
