Nowadays, most people have a presence online. Aside from meeting in person, online profiles on LinkedIn and other networking sites are often the first place that a potential employer, business partner, or new hire learns about you.
Read on to learn how a professional headshot photo can help you leave a lasting impression and stand out from the crowd.
1. First impressions
Since most people have a professional online presence, first impressions are often made long before an in-person meeting. Just as you would go to an interview dressed appropriately, you need a professional headshot to make a good first impression online. Your headshot is often the first thing that potential employers, business partners or employees see. Make your first impression count!
Your photo is the face of your brand, and it can quickly help people evaluate your personality. Use this to your advantage by playing up aspects of your personality that you'd like to emphasize, such as wearing a statement necklace or bold tie to show creativity or tailored suits and blazers to show professionalism.
The background of your photo adds information about you as well. Although background options are endless, one interesting option to consider is an environmental portrait. Environmental portraits are taken at your home, work, or place that says something about you. These portraits show more context and give real insight to your personality and lifestyle.
2. Stand out from the crowd
Convey professionalism and credibility with your headshot photo. There is a correlation between perceived professionalism of you from the professionalism of your photo. Market your best self and show that you take yourself seriously.
Poorly lit photos, selfies, cropped group photos and pictures taken from a night out on the town are not headshot material! Always be cautious of the impression that you are sending with your headshot photo (see first impressions above).
LinkedIn profiles with photos typically get 7x more views than profiles without a profile image. People are much more likely to view, read, and connect with users that have a profile image. Think about your professional goals. Are you looking to get a job? Find new business opportunities? Looking for great candidates to hire? Simply having a profile image can help you be more successful with all of these.
In today's fast-paced society, most people won't take the time to read through your entire LinkedIn profile. However, they're much more likely to take you seriously if you have an image to accompany the details. Don't waste an easy opportunity to get your profile noticed.
